What’s the Back Story?
So… in the summer of 2022, Sombr made the decision to drop out his junior year and that’s as far back as where this goes. He had just released his latest song at the time, “Caroline”, released on June 15th, 2022, just in time before he turned 17.
And, following how well the track was received, he decided to drop out. But, of course, he has been making music way before 2022. Cue into this: He released his debut single “Nothing Left to Say” back on October 1, 2021, at which point he was 16.
Got it? Well, now, we tell you everything else we found out about him, including details about his early life, family background, ethnicity, the industry plant side talks, and pretty much… everything there is to know about him. Before we get into all of that, though, take a quick look at his profile rundown.

Early Life
Sombr was born on July 5, 2005, in New York City, United States. His zodiac sign is Cancer. And yes, he is Gen Z and currently 20 years old. His real name is Shane Michael Boose, and for what it’s worth, he was raised on the Lower East Side of NYC. He is also known as Shane Boose, and yes, his parents are still very much married.
He grew up learning to play musical instruments, often having his father, Andy Boose, as a coach. He attended LaGuardia High School. In an April 2025 interview with Spout Podcast, he was quoted as saying his major was Vocal, but he had to drop out after “Caroline” started going viral to focus on his music career full-time.
He was in junior high at the time and the year was 2022. Although originally from New York City, he currently lives in Los Angeles, California.
Family Life
His father’s name is Andrew Boose (also known as Andy Boose and sometimes as Renè Risquè). His mother’s name is Bennah Serfaty. He has one sister who, like every other member of his family, has appeared in some of his TikToks. One of those includes that in December 2022, they both swapped clothes.
Meanwhile, in April 2025, he surprised his mom with a Times Square billboard of himself in New York City. His dad is an event producer, works for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and used to front a cabaret band called “René Risqué and the Art Lovers”.
Both Sombr dad and mom were present at the occasion of his TV debut back in May 2025.

Family Ancestry
According to different documents available on the web, as obtained by ethnicelebs.com, his father has German, English, Swiss, Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, Scottish, Dutch, French, Irish, and Swedish ancestry, while his mom has Jewish [Sephardi, Ashkenazi] ancestry. So, yes, Sombr is part Jewish.
Sombr’s paternal grandfather’s name is Robert Andrew Boose while his grandmother’s name is Jeanne Springer. Meanwhile, his paternal great-grandparents are Howard Russell Boose Jr. and Peggy Specht (from his grandfather’s side). At the same time, Alfred Springer and Joan Ruth Beyer are his paternal great-grandparents from his grandmother’s side of the family.
Marc Mordechai Serfaty and Sheila Rosenberg Wilson are the names of his maternal grandfather and grandmother, respectively. His great-grandparents are Yedidiah Serfaty and Simha Tordjman (from his maternal grandfather’s side) and Louis Wilson/Wilkoreiski and Bertha Rosenberg from his grandmother’s side of the family.

Personal Life
As far as relationships, Sombr is currently single. However, he admitted to having dated a girl named Caroline, who his fourth single, “Caroline,” was about. So, yes, Caroline is the name of Sombr’s ex-girlfriend, and although the timeline of their relationship is not clear, they likely broke up in the early months of 2022.
Interestingly, he, in August 2023, shared a TikTok where he hinted that his ex-girlfriend sent him a DM. In the screenshotted chat, his ex was quoted as saying:
“Why did you write a song about me lol. Just forget about me already.”
Meanwhile, in March 2025, he shared another TikTok, where he revealed that his ex and her new boyfriend used his song for a couples’ dance trend on TikTok. He captioned the TikTok: “tell me why I just saw my ex and her new bf do the couples’ trend on my song as if I didn’t write this song after our breakup.”
And, for what it’s worth, he also talked about that in a street interview, so he definitely wasn’t joking when he said his ex and her new man danced to his song. And, yes, he is straight.
Body Measurements
Sombr is 6 feet 5 inches tall (195.6 cm), as finally proven by TikTok height guy Shane Fan back in April. He weighs around 66 kg (145 pounds), has a lean body type, dark brown eyes, and glowy dark brown hair. He is half Jewish.

Career Timeline
Shane Boose began his musical career way before he realised it… Well, way before it became an actual career, back when his father taught him to play musical instruments, growing up.
In a November street interview that also featured his father, he was quoted as saying that his dad, Andy Boose, a former band member, inspired his music. Sombr got signed to Warner Records in January 2023 and in September 2023, he released his debut EP, “In Another Life”.
Speaking of music, Shane Boose, who, although currently living in LA, has written, recorded, and produced many of his songs in his New York City bedroom. Apparently, his debut single, “Nothing Left to Say,” released in 2021, was recorded in his bedroom.

Streams & Social Media
In August 2025, Sombr had nearly 100 million (96.7 M) monthly audience on YouTube Music and 51.8 million Spotify monthly listeners. Interestingly, his monthly listeners on Spotify skyrocketed from 34 monthly listeners in May and 43.7 million in June to 52 million in August.
Per Music Metrics Vault estimations, the top five cities where his listeners live are Sydney (Australia, 667K), Melbourne (Australia, 587K), London (United Kingdom, 608K), Jakarta (Indonesia, 1.2M), and Quezon City (Philippines, 745K).
These stream metrics notwithstanding, details about Sombr’s net worth are not available online. But, he sure should be worth well over $100k (but, again, this is not confirmed).
On follower/subscriber count, he has 1.8 million followers on Spotify, 3.3 million followers on TikTok, 2.1 million followers on Instagram, and 475k thousand subscribers on YouTube.
Industry Plant Rumors
Although there have been different narratives flying around social media, especially on X (fkaTwitter), about Sombr being an “industry plant,” the reality doesn’t quite match the theory.
When you look at the open-source numbers for his streams, the fact that his fan base is as organic as it gets, the already-known detail that he went to an artsy high school where he majored in vocal music, and the truth that he has been playing instruments since he was a kid… the general consensus ends up being pretty clear: Sombr is not an industry plant.
Now, sure, there’s the argument that his parents are “well-connected” (whatever that’s supposed to mean) and I’ll give it to you, that can be a fair point to some extent. But at the same time, he has been working for years (released his first single more than four years ago). He has put in way too much work for his success to just be brushed off and whitewashed as something “planted.”
Cue into this: you can probably name plenty of people whose parents are way more “connected” than Sombr’s are even rumored to be, and yet, they still aren’t pulling the kind of success he is pulling right now. No shade to anyone, of course, but let’s be factual, Sombr deserves way more credit for his talent than he has been getting… lately. So, no, he is not a nepo baby or industry assisted plant.
